Diversity Matters in the Sales Industry

Derrick Jenkins, Head of Marketing at Owler, answered a few questions regarding the role diversity plays in the sales industry and provided great recommendations for sales leaders to follow.



Why is it important to have a diverse sales team?

“Diversity is beneficial and critical to the long-term success of any business. It's even more critical for sales teams to be diverse because as the workplace has evolved, so has your customer. This doesn’t mean that sales executives should exclusively work with customers who are aligned with their diversity or “otherness.” However, a diverse sales team has experience navigating their careers amongst others with varying backgrounds.”



What advice would you give to someone just starting out in sales who is Black or a member of another underrepresented community?

“Don’t be scared to ask questions about anything and everything. Additionally, don’t be scared to ask for what you want. Everything is about positioning, so cleverly go for it.”
